Why are we hiding?

Are we happy plastic people
Under shiny plastic steeples
With walls around our weakness
And smiles to hide our pain
But if the invitation’s open
To every heart that has been broken
Maybe then we close the curtain
On our stained glass masquerade
---Casting Crowns

Are we happy plastic people? It seems so much like we are. It seems that we are hiding behind a facade of perfectness. But why do we hide, why do we act like we have it all together?

I do not remember Jesus calling us to hide, or to be perfect. He simply told us to give it up and follow him. Look at the disciples, the apostles and the early church. They never proclaimed perfection, they claimed righteousness through grace. This means they recognized that they could never get it together, and could not do it on their own. Look at Peter, one of Jesus' closest friends, and one who studied with Jesus. He denied Jesus three times, but still became a foundation to the early church and a great witness.

So many times, I know that I myself have taken on the role of acting like I have it all together and have it planned out. But really inside I am worried, and lost, and am nothing more than a sinner that apart from the grace of Christ Jesus would be abandoned to my sin. I ask others of you, followers of Christ, let us be a little more transparent. Please let others know that you struggle, then maybe we can take down the curtain of perfection we require people to pass through before they can come into our churches.

Let us make it known that we are sinners saved by a truly amazing grace. That covers everything we have done and will do. Our God loves us more than we could ever fathom, we are his creation, and he longs to love us. Let us open ourselves up to that love as we truly fear him and plead for his help. In the end, we don't have it together, we are all sinners who fall way short of the glory of God. But remember the good good news. We don't have to measure up, we just need to give up our lives and ask God to lead us.

Come out of hiding, and into the arms of God.
